Civil Defence Minister Nikki Kaye announced today (Friday 5 June 2015) that Cabinet approved the new National Civil Defence Emergency Management Plan, which was given formal approval by the Governor General on 2 June 2015 and made as Order in Council.

With winter approaching the Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management is using social media to help make sure New Zealanders are prepared. A series of tweets and facebook posts will be shared at the end of May to highlight the importance of learning about disasters, having a household emergency plan, having emergency survival items and preparing a getaway kit.

The warning system which provides coordinated tsunami threat information to countries throughout the Pacific marks its 50th anniversary next week. New Zealand will play a part in an International Tsunami Symposium in Hawaii on April 20 and 21 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Pacific Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (PTWS), and a subsequent meeting of the Intergovernmental Coordination Group (ICG) of the PTWS from 22-24 April.

Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet Chief Executive Andrew Kibblewhite today (9 December 2014) announced the appointment of Sarah Stuart-Black as the new Director of Civil Defence and Emergency Management. Sarah has been with the Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management since 2003, and has been the Acting Director since John Hamilton’s recent retirement.

The Response Management Director’s Guideline for CDEM Group and Local Controllers [DGL06/08] was updated to V1.1 in October 2014 to recognise the New Zealand Coordinated Incident Management System (CIMS) 2nd edition that was published earlier in 2014 (replacing the first version of CIMS that was referenced in V1). The updated version also reflects Directors Guidelines that had been updated or issued since V1 was published. The general doctrine in the Guideline remains unchanged. The updated V1.1 will not be distributed in hard copy format; it can however be printed in A5 format to replace the content of the original hard copy folder.

This edition reinforces the theme of building community resilience, the theme that underpins all our work in civil defence emergency management. It is very pleasing to see just how many different projects are underway that contribute to resilience. Outlining some of these projects in bulletins such as this is intended to encourage other Groups to think about these approaches and consider something similar for their region.
