Wine

It was originally estimated that 2% (50,000 litres) of Marlborough’s wine production was lost in the 2016 earthquakes and that undamaged storage would be insufficient for the 2017 harvest. The Marlborough wine industry moved quickly to develop temporary wine tank storage solutions and other logistics to successfully manage the 2017 vintage.

Good communication between the industry response team and MPI ensured mutual support and cooperation. MPI ran workshops to support grape-growers’ decisions on whether to apply for funding from the Primary Sector Earthquake Relief Fund for uninsurable infrastructure.

MPI has subsequently approved in-principle a project led by NZ Winegrowers through the Primary Industries Earthquake Recovery Fund for community-based projects. The project will look at enhancing resilience for Marlborough and North Canterbury wine industries.
