Tsunami Evacuation Director’s Guideline
The Tsunami Evacuation Director’s Guideline has been updated to promote the use of a blue tsunami evacuation zone, making evacuation easier to understand.
The purpose of this guideline is to provide a nationally consistent approach to tsunami evacuation by using a Blue Zone on all public tsunami evacuation maps.
This approach simplifies public-facing tsunami evacuation zones, particularly in local-source tsunami, when risk to life is highest and there is not enough time for an official warning. The Blue Zone will be communicated to the public before tsunami so that when there is a long or strong earthquake, people are able to take action quickly and evacuate the Blue Zone.
Displaying one evacuation zone simplifies maps, helping people to interpret their risk and reducing complexity for users. The guideline will be used by Civil Defence Emergency Management (CDEM) Groups and local authorities to update tsunami evacuation maps in their regions. This will take some time to implement, and regions will have until July 2031 to update the maps.
