New Zealand ShakeOut 2018
In June Civil Defence Minister Hon. Kris Faafoi launched New Zealand ShakeOut 2018, our national earthquake drill and tsunami hīkoi (walk out), on 6 June at Wilford School in Wellington.
All of New Zealand is at risk of earthquakes and all our coast is at risk of tsunami. We can’t predict when they will happen, but we can learn to protect ourselves.
New Zealand ShakeOut is happening at 9:30 am, 18 October 2018. It’s a great chance for all New Zealanders to practise the right action to take in an earthquake – Drop, Cover and Hold – and practise your tsunami hīkoi if you’re near the coast.
The campaign is co-ordinated by the Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management, and shared by Civil Defence Emergency Management Groups, Government agencies and partner organisations across the country.
How do I get involved?
- Sign up to be counted. You can sign up as an individual, household, workplace or organisation.
- Once you have signed up, we will keep you up to date with how you can get ready to ShakeOut.
- Spread the word by sharing ShakeOut (share with family, friends and colleagues, social media).
- Drop, Cover and Hold at 9.30am on 18 October 2018*, followed by a tsunami hīkoi if you’re in a coastal area.
*If you cannot do the drill at 9:30 am, 18 October 2018, you can choose a time to suit you within two weeks of the drill (and still be counted).
