More than 250,000 registered for New Zealand ShakeOut

More than 250,000 people have already registered to take part in New Zealand ShakeOut, our national earthquake drill.

The target is to have at least 1.5 million people signed up for the ‘Drop, Cover and Hold’ drill at 9:15am, 15 October 2015.

“The ShakeOut campaign was launched on 28 April, and it is pleasing to see over a quarter of a million New Zealanders already committed to taking part,” said the Director of Civil Defence Emergency Management, Sarah Stuart-Black.

“With just over four months to go until the drill, we are well on the way to the target, but there is still a long way to 1.5 million people.”

Mrs Stuart-Black said that recent earthquakes near Wanaka and Dunedin were timely reminders of the need to be prepared and know the right actions to take.

ShakeOut – it’s as easy as 1, 2, 3…

  • Sign up to take part at www.shakeout.govt.nz. It only takes two minutes. The website has lots of tips and information for doing the drill and being prepared.

  • Spread the word (tell friends, family, workmates, share on Facebook, Twitter etc.).

  • Do the Drop, Cover and Hold drill at 9:15am, 15 October 2015. (If you cannot do the drill at 9:15am, 15 October 2015, you can choose a time to suit within two weeks and still be counted).
