The National Advisory issued following the 8.8
earthquake OFF THE EAST COAST OF KAMCHATKA RUSSIA

New Zealand Standard Time is cancelled.
Tsunami activity around the New Zealand coastlines has significantly decreased.
However, there may still be strong and unusual currents and these may continue until Monday. We advise the New Zealand public to exercise caution in and around the ocean and estuaries over the weekend.

A State of Local Emergency was declared for Christchurch City (including Banks Peninsula) and Selwyn District on 1 May 2025 due to severe weather. The Selywn District state of emergency was terminate on 2 May and the Christchurch City state of emergency was terminate on 4 May.

A National Advisory: Earthquake Being Assessed message was issued on 25 March 2025 at 2:58pm following a magnitude 6.8 earthquake off the west coast of the South Island. The earthquake generated strong and unusual currents and unpredictable surges at the shore. A National Advisory: No Tsunami Activity Expected for New Zealand was issued at 8:05 pm after the threat had passed.

Heavy rainfall impacted the Otago region, particularly Dunedin and the Clutha District. A State of local emergency was declared for Dunedin City at 11:55pm on 3 October 2024 due to significant impacts caused by heavy rainfall. A State of local emergency was declared for Clutha District at 1:05pm on 4 October 2024 due to significant flooding impacts. Both states of emergency were terminated on 6 October 2024.

The declaration was made as a precautionary measure to ensure Emergency Management Southland was able to respond to the concerns around the threat to life and property from erosion and the landfill at Bluecliffs.
