NEMA encourages community groups to apply for Cyclone Gabrielle welfare reimbursement

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is encouraging marae, iwi and community organisations who cared for people affected by Cyclone Gabrielle to apply for reimbursement funding before applications close at the end of this month.

NEMA’s Cyclone Gabrielle Welfare Support Grant is available to reimburse costs already incurred by marae, iwi, and recognised community organisations (including rural groups, Pacific organisations, and ethnic service providers) to care for people who were affected, displaced, or isolated during the state of national emergency. Applications are open until 30 June.

Grants are usually capped at $40,000 but organisations may be able to apply for a subsequent grant after discussing their circumstances with NEMA.

“Marae, iwi and community groups worked hard to respond to the cyclone and it’s important to reimburse them as quickly and easily as possible,” Director Emergency Management John Price said.

“The Cyclone Gabrielle Welfare Support Grant recognises that these organisations have used their own resources to fund their immediate response to Cyclone Gabrielle.

“The Grant provides a faster and easier alternative to the normal process of seeking reimbursement through local authorities for emergency response costs.”

Applicants will need to meet certain eligibility criteria and conditions to receive funding for eligible costs incurred to support impacted communities during Cyclone Gabrielle.
