Operating communications systems

This topic is an elective topic in the core skills strand designed to provide learners with an overview of primary and alternative communications equipment used in CDEM. It is an elective topic because not all roles in CDEM require a person to use a two-way radio.

This topic requires the learner to find out what communications equipment is available to them, that they will be expected to use. It also discusses the features and functionality of a range of primary and alternate communications equipment and includes activities and learning around using radios in the indoors and outdoors. The outdoor radio activities in the Assessment Activity Booklet are optional extras to enable achievement of the unit standard identified below.

Operating communications systems
Note: To complete the online learning module for this topic, learners will need access to headphones or computer speakers to listen to audio recordings.

Note: Two diagrammatical errors have been identified in the Communications Equipment section of this online module. The first error is that the interactive arrow that appears at the bottom of the screen on the VHF radio slide points to the incorrect unit in the alternative communications part of the graphic. The arrow should point to the hand-held radio unit. The second error appears on the HF radio slide and is of similar nature - the interactive arrow should point to the base-unit in the alternative communications part of the graphic.
