History and activities
The Taupo Civil Defence Emergency Response Team was formed in 1986 by volunteers at the request of the Taupo District Council. This Response Team now falls under the Waikato CDEM Group, but is owned by Taupo District Council.
Membership comprises 10 to 14 volunteers trained in light rescue, welfare, communications, flood response, building searches, USAR, rope work and severe weather response. Training is held every Monday evening from 7-9pm. Weekend exercises are held at least once a year for team building and testing capability.
NZRT6 has an active relationship with local police and fire services and MCDEM. Past response activities include Manawatu Floods 2004, Turangi Floods 2004, Whakatane floods 2004, Napier/Taupo snow emergency 2009 along with numerous police requests for urban search assistance and lighting assistance for the fire service and accident recovery events.
Team equipment resources have been gradually built up over the years. Primary equipment includes:
- Response truck with water pumping capability, emergency lighting and general rescue carrying capacity
- Welfare trailer equipped with full kitchen facilities and the capacity to produce 60 meals per hour
- Rescue trailer which carries the team’s rescue equipment cache
NZRT6 is the only response team for the Waikato CDEM Group and as such has service MOU’s with a number of District Councils in the area.
